About Destinations

Built in 1634 by the King of Mengwi, Taman Ayun Temple is renowned for its unique multi-tiered shrines called "Meru." The temple, encircled by a wide moat with garden terraces leading to its center, includes ancestral shrines for the royal family and Meru shrines dedicated to the Almighty God. Visitors can engage in various Balinese cultural activities, such as making cakes and offerings, learning gamelan music and dance, trying on Balinese costumes, and participating in batik and songket cloth weaving, all conducted by locals dressed in traditional attire. Guests can also observe and purchase handcrafted works from local artisans, who often accept custom orders and are accustomed to communicating with foreign visitors. Taman Ayun Temple also serves as a source of irrigation, providing water for local agriculture and helping to prevent flooding. The moat, historically a defensive measure, continues to support the fertility of nearby rice fields, ensuring prosperity for local farmers and serving as a vital water source for the agricultural land in the area for centuries.

Tanah Lot, meaning "Land in the Sea" in Balinese, is a temple perched on a large offshore rock shaped by the ocean tides over the years and is believed to have been built by the 16th-century priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, who, according to legend, rested on the rock and instructed local fishermen to build a shrine there to honor the Balinese sea gods. Due to coastal abrasion, which erodes the shoreline by 1.5 to 2 cm annually, the government and local community have installed tetrapod concrete structures to protect Tanah Lot. The Balinese hold the sea in high regard and perform regular ceremonies to maintain the sacredness of the area. Tanah Lot attracts numerous local and international visitors, providing a positive economic impact on the local community. These simplified explanations highlight the cultural significance, historical importance, and community efforts to preserve these iconic Balinese temples.
