TENGANAN AND CANDIDASA

About Destinations

Tenganan is one of the three traditional Bali Aga villages, along with Trunyan and Sembiran, that still adhere to ancestral customs. The village maintains traditional rules for building sizes, yard arrangements, and temple locations. Most residents are farmers, but some are craftsmen creating carvings, woven bamboo items, palm leaf paintings, and the renowned Gringsing fabric.

Candidasa is a seaside town on the eastern coast of Bali, centered around Jalan Raya Candidasa, with hotels, restaurants, and shops lining the main road. It attracts tourists, especially divers, seeking a quieter alternative to the busy Kuta area or the large resorts at Nusa Dua. Originally known as Teluk Kehen or Chili Dasa, the name Candidasa is now used, possibly linked to the "lingga" in a nearby temple, symbolizing Shiva. The temple is highly respected by the Balinese and provides economic benefits to the community. To protect the coastal area from erosion, concrete barriers have been built.

Goa Lawah, known for its thousands of bats, is believed to have healing waters and a giant snake, with the name "Goa Lawah" translating to "Bat Cave." The cave is thought to extend through the mountains to a nearby town. Pura Goa Lawah, established in the 11th century by Hindu priest Mpu Kuturan, is one of Bali's six holiest temples and served as a meditation center. It played a significant role during the 1849 War of Kusamba between the Dutch and the Klungkung kingdom. The cave also houses other animals like snakes and reflects the Balinese concept of "Nyegara Gunung," emphasizing the interconnectedness of the sea and mountains, maintaining natural and spiritual balance.
