About Destinations

Uluwatu Temple is a renowned cliff-hanging temple perched on the southernmost tip of Bali's Bukit Peninsula. The temple, dating back to the 11th century, is set atop sheer cliffs that drop 70 meters into the Indian Ocean, creating a breathtaking backdrop, especially at sunset when the nightly Kecak dance performance takes place. Made from black coral rock, the temple's tiered structure stands in striking contrast to its dramatic location, offering an amazing silhouette against the setting sun. The Kecak, or monkey dance, performed nightly between 6 and 7 pm in the temple courtyard, depicts a shortened version of the Ramayana Saga. The story follows Prince Rama, who, along with his wife Shinta and brother Lakshmana, wanders into the woods. There, the giant Rahwana kidnaps Shinta and holds her captive in his palace. Rama enlists the help of Lakshmana to find his friend Sugriwa, the King of the Monkey Kingdom. Sugriwa sends his commander, the white monkey Hanoman, to check on Shinta in Rahwana's palace. After enjoying the cultural performance, visitors can indulge in fresh seafood, including fish, prawns, crabs, squid, and mussels, all grilled and served with rice, vegetables, and special Balinese sauces. This delicious meal is often accompanied by strolling musicians and a splendid sunset view on Jimbaran beach.
